Black Tie & Tails Gala

The 4th Annual Black Tie & Tails Gala celebrating community, canines and compassion is taking place on Saturday, February 18th at The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe. The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe puts on this fundraiser to help cats and dogs in the area.

This is a one-of-a-kind, black-tie optional event, over 300 guests will be greeted by a Hollywood-style red carpet entry, immediately followed by the swankiest of champagne and hors d'oeuvre receptions complete with passed appetizers for your dogs, an elegant dining experience that only the The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe could provide, music, dancing and unexpected entertainment!

Help Orphaned Kittens

Every spring, we are inundated with loads of kittens. The litters sometimes come to us without their mothers or, in some cases, the mother cat isn’t healthy enough to provide enough milk for her babies.

The cost of milk replacement for a needy litter of kittens runs about $16.00/day for an average sized litter needing to be fed every 2-3 hours. A kittens' growth and development needs require extra protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals to get the right start in life.

Help Homeless Puppies

Yes, even puppies can find themselves without a home. It’s hard to believe, but every year the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe rescues multiple puppies. Baby dogs have different nutritional needs than adult dogs, so we need to invest in their future health by feeding them good quality puppy food.

The cost of high-calcium, vitamin-rich food with essential nutrients is approximately $8.50/day for an average sized litter of growing puppies.

Make a Dog Healthier

A long-term benefit of spaying and neutering is improved health for both cats and dogs. Spaying females prior to their first heat cycle nearly eliminates the risk of breast cancer and totally prevents uterine infections and uterine cancer. Neutering males prevents testicular cancer and enlargement of the prostate gland, and greatly reduces their risk for perianal tumors.

Because of these health factors, not to mention pet overpopulation, the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe spays/neuters every pet we re-home. Please help us continue improving the health of pets in our community by choosing this item.

The average cost of one dog spay/neuter is $150.00.

Stop Cat Overpopulation

The rate at which animals multiply is astounding. For example, a cat can produce 3 litters in one year, with an average of 5 kittens per litter. If each of these 15 new cats goes on to have more kittens, the problem can get out of control very quickly.

The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe sterilizes every pet we adopt out, thereby decreasing animal relinquishment, negative animal behavior (roaming and biting) and our local homeless pet population. Spaying and neutering our areas’ pet population is important to the overall health of our community in so many ways. Please choose to help.

The average cost of one cat spay/neuter is $100.00.

Cat Toys & Dog Treats

Homeless cats and dogs need to play, enjoy delicious treats and generally be spoiled too! The environment at the shelter can sometimes be very stressful for our reluctant tenants but we try to comfort them in any way possible. Cats love to play with fuzzy mice, puppies love to chew squeaky toys, older dogs find comfort in a stuffed animal and they all love to have special treats. Please help us care for them in the best way possible and ease their sorrow while staying in the shelter. You can make their wait for a forever family a better one with this option.

The cost for some treats and toys for one month is $50.00.

Ski Free on Arrival Date at Squaw Valley

Skiers and snowboarders coming off the airplane can ski or ride the afternoon and evening for free at Squaw Valley! Guests can present a same-day commercial airline boarding pass with a matching photo ID at Squaw Valley’s Season Passes & Tickets office and receive a complimentary lift ticket good for the rest of the afternoon as well as night skiing, when night operations are in effect.

These complimentary afternoon lift tickets are valid from 1pm until 9pm on Fridays & Saturdays or from 1pm until 7pm mid-week while night operations are in effect. This new program means that guests from across the nation can have breakfast in the airport of their origination city and enjoy lunch, or even dinner on the slopes of Squaw Valley.

To be eligible for a complimentary afternoon ticket, guests must present a proof of same-day air travel at Squaw Valley’s Season Pass Office or the Special Tickets Office. One ticket per proof of travel. Proof of travel is defined as a boarding pass, printed itinerary or baggage claim check. Document of proof must contain the day’s travel date, flight number and traveler’s full name. Matching photo ID must be presented.

This deal is valid until the end of the 2011-12 winter season and there are no blackout dates. While The Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) is the closest commercial air service to Squaw Valley, any commercial airport qualifies for the deal. Lift ticket only valid on same day as airline travel, weather and conditions permitting.

Agate Bay Realty guests can also buy discount lift tickets for Squaw Valley, Northstar-at-Tahoe, Alpine Meadows, and Diamond Peak.

Pet Pantry Program

The economy has been affecting dogs, cats and people this past year and the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe is doing something about it! Many animals have been turned in for financial reasons. We would much rather have our friends in good homes so we are helping out with the Pet Pantry. This program collects pet food around our area and distributes it to needy pets.

If you would like to donate food to this program, donation barrels are available at these locations; Mickey’s Pet Stop, Pet Station, Scraps Dog Bakery and Tails by the Lake. Support these businesses and drop an extra can or bag of food in the barrel while you are there.

Holiday Jazz Fest over Thanksgiving Weekend

Guests are invited to celebrate the holiday season in style once again with the Holiday Jazz Fest November 25-26, 2011. This annual two-day celebratory musical event features Hyatt Lake Tahoe's best line-up to date, with today's most talented jazz musicians. Kick off the holiday weekend with a High Sierra Thanksgiving at Lone Eagle Grille and settle in for a weekend of exceptional live jazz in Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe's idyllic lakeside setting.

The Holiday Jazz Fest kicks off on Friday evening, November 25th, with Jeffrey Osborne and guest. Saturday evening, November 26th, features David Benoit, A Charlie Brown Christmas and Euge Groove. Doors open each evening at 7:00 p.m. and live entertainment begins at 8:00 p.m.

Two ticket options are available for purchase. Individual VIP Tickets, priced at $95.00 each/per night, include preferred seating at the concert, plus access to the pre-concert wine reception in the high limit slot area of Hyatt's casino featuring select wines from Rodney Strong Vineyards. Reserved Seating Tickets are also available for both concerts at $65.00 each/per night. 10% Nevada State Entertainment Tax has been applied to the face price of each ticket. Restaurant Week (Oct 2-9)

The 2nd Annual Lake Tahoe Restaurant Week gives food aficionados an opportunity to enjoy 3-course, prix-fixe menus at 60+ participating restaurants, both new and established favorites, throughout the Lake Tahoe region for $20, $30 or $40 per person. The event kicks off the first Sunday in October, Sunday, October 2, and runs through Sunday, October 9, 2011. No tickets or coupons are required to enjoy these delicious offerings at exceptional values.

James McMurtry at the Crystal Bay Casino

On Saturday, September 17th the Austin, TX native James McMurtry will be playing at the Crystal Bay Casino in north Lake Tahoe. Should be a great show in a small venue.

The son of acclaimed author Larry McMurtry (Lonesome Dove, Terms of Endearment), James grew up on a steady diet of Johnny Cash and Roy Acuff records. His first album, released in 1989, was produced by John Mellencamp and marked the beginning of a series of acclaimed projects for Columbia and Sugar Hill. In 2004, McMurtry released the universally lauded Live in Aught-Three on Compadre Records. 2005's Childish Things garnered some of the highest critical praise of McMurtry's career and spent six weeks at No. 1 on the Americana Music Radio Chart in 2005 and 2006. In September 2006, Childish Things and "We Can't Make It Here" won the Americana Music Awards for album and song of the year, respectively. McMurtry received more Americana Music Award nominations for 2008's Just Us Kids. The album marked his highest Billboard 200 chart position in more than 19 years. The Washington Post noted McMurtry's live prowess: "Much attention is paid to James McMurtry's lyrics, and rightfully so: He creates a novel's worth of emotion and experience in four minutes of blisteringly stark couplets. What gets overlooked, however, is that he's an accomplished rock guitar player. At a sold-out Birchmere, the Austin-based artist was joined by drummer Daren Hess and bassist Ronnie Johnson in a set that demonstrated the raw power of wince-inducing imagery propelled by electric guitar. It was serious stuff, imparted by a singularly serious band."

Animal Rescue Fundraiser

The Wylie Animal Rescue Foundation (WARF) is a small group of pet friendly volunteers dedicated to rescuing companion animals. They rescue animals that are in imminent danger of euthanasia, usually directly from the euthanasia holding rooms of local shelters. We have rescued thousands of animals from certain death, but millions more were not so lucky and died--unloved and unwanted--in shelters across the country. We hope that you can help us turn the tide of suffering and death.

On Saturday, September 10th between 11am - 4pm the Dog Day in the Park fundraiser will be taking place at the Tahoe Vista Animal Shelter which serves the Truckee and North Tahoe portion of Placer County. There will be $6 rabies vaccinations, licensing and $20 micro-chipping, a barbecue, carnival-style dog themed booths, dog show contests, dog and cat adoption and a raffle. Join the fun at the North Tahoe Regional Park on National Avenue in Tahoe Vista.
