The 4th Annual Black Tie & Tails Gala celebrating community, canines and compassion is taking place on Saturday, February 18th at The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe. The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe puts on this fundraiser to help cats and dogs in the area.

This is a one-of-a-kind, black-tie optional event, over 300 guests will be greeted by a Hollywood-style red carpet entry, immediately followed by the swankiest of champagne and hors d'oeuvre receptions complete with passed appetizers for your dogs, an elegant dining experience that only the The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe could provide, music, dancing and unexpected entertainment!

Help Orphaned Kittens

Every spring, we are inundated with loads of kittens. The litters sometimes come to us without their mothers or, in some cases, the mother cat isn’t healthy enough to provide enough milk for her babies.

The cost of milk replacement for a needy litter of kittens runs about $16.00/day for an average sized litter needing to be fed every 2-3 hours. A kittens' growth and development needs require extra protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals to get the right start in life.

Help Homeless Puppies

Yes, even puppies can find themselves without a home. It’s hard to believe, but every year the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe rescues multiple puppies. Baby dogs have different nutritional needs than adult dogs, so we need to invest in their future health by feeding them good quality puppy food.

The cost of high-calcium, vitamin-rich food with essential nutrients is approximately $8.50/day for an average sized litter of growing puppies.

Make a Dog Healthier

A long-term benefit of spaying and neutering is improved health for both cats and dogs. Spaying females prior to their first heat cycle nearly eliminates the risk of breast cancer and totally prevents uterine infections and uterine cancer. Neutering males prevents testicular cancer and enlargement of the prostate gland, and greatly reduces their risk for perianal tumors.

Because of these health factors, not to mention pet overpopulation, the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe spays/neuters every pet we re-home. Please help us continue improving the health of pets in our community by choosing this item.

The average cost of one dog spay/neuter is $150.00.

Stop Cat Overpopulation

The rate at which animals multiply is astounding. For example, a cat can produce 3 litters in one year, with an average of 5 kittens per litter. If each of these 15 new cats goes on to have more kittens, the problem can get out of control very quickly.

The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe sterilizes every pet we adopt out, thereby decreasing animal relinquishment, negative animal behavior (roaming and biting) and our local homeless pet population. Spaying and neutering our areas’ pet population is important to the overall health of our community in so many ways. Please choose to help.

The average cost of one cat spay/neuter is $100.00.

Cat Toys & Dog Treats

Homeless cats and dogs need to play, enjoy delicious treats and generally be spoiled too! The environment at the shelter can sometimes be very stressful for our reluctant tenants but we try to comfort them in any way possible. Cats love to play with fuzzy mice, puppies love to chew squeaky toys, older dogs find comfort in a stuffed animal and they all love to have special treats. Please help us care for them in the best way possible and ease their sorrow while staying in the shelter. You can make their wait for a forever family a better one with this option.

The cost for some treats and toys for one month is $50.00.

Ski Free on Arrival Date at Squaw Valley

Skiers and snowboarders coming off the airplane can ski or ride the afternoon and evening for free at Squaw Valley! Guests can present a same-day commercial airline boarding pass with a matching photo ID at Squaw Valley’s Season Passes & Tickets office and receive a complimentary lift ticket good for the rest of the afternoon as well as night skiing, when night operations are in effect.

These complimentary afternoon lift tickets are valid from 1pm until 9pm on Fridays & Saturdays or from 1pm until 7pm mid-week while night operations are in effect. This new program means that guests from across the nation can have breakfast in the airport of their origination city and enjoy lunch, or even dinner on the slopes of Squaw Valley.

To be eligible for a complimentary afternoon ticket, guests must present a proof of same-day air travel at Squaw Valley’s Season Pass Office or the Special Tickets Office. One ticket per proof of travel. Proof of travel is defined as a boarding pass, printed itinerary or baggage claim check. Document of proof must contain the day’s travel date, flight number and traveler’s full name. Matching photo ID must be presented.

This deal is valid until the end of the 2011-12 winter season and there are no blackout dates. While The Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) is the closest commercial air service to Squaw Valley, any commercial airport qualifies for the deal. Lift ticket only valid on same day as airline travel, weather and conditions permitting.

Pet Pantry Program

The economy has been affecting dogs, cats and people this past year and the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe is doing something about it! Many animals have been turned in for financial reasons. We would much rather have our friends in good homes so we are helping out with the Pet Pantry. This program collects pet food around our area and distributes it to needy pets.

If you would like to donate food to this program, donation barrels are available at these locations; Mickey’s Pet Stop, Pet Station, Scraps Dog Bakery and Tails by the Lake. Support these businesses and drop an extra can or bag of food in the barrel while you are there.

Holiday Jazz Fest over Thanksgiving Weekend

Guests are invited to celebrate the holiday season in style once again with the Holiday Jazz Fest November 25-26, 2011. This annual two-day celebratory musical event features Hyatt Lake Tahoe's best line-up to date, with today's most talented jazz musicians. Kick off the holiday weekend with a High Sierra Thanksgiving at Lone Eagle Grille and settle in for a weekend of exceptional live jazz in Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe's idyllic lakeside setting.

James McMurtry at the Crystal Bay Casino

On Saturday, September 17th the Austin, TX native James McMurtry will be playing at the Crystal Bay Casino in north Lake Tahoe. Should be a great show in a small venue.

The son of acclaimed author Larry McMurtry (Lonesome Dove, Terms of Endearment), James grew up on a steady diet of Johnny Cash and Roy Acuff records. His first album, released in 1989, was produced by John Mellencamp and marked the beginning of a series of acclaimed projects for Columbia and Sugar Hill. In 2004, McMurtry released the universally lauded Live in Aught-Three on Compadre Records. 2005's Childish Things garnered some of the highest critical praise of McMurtry's career and spent six weeks at No. 1 on the Americana Music Radio Chart in 2005 and 2006. In September 2006, Childish Things and "We Can't Make It Here" won the Americana Music Awards for album and song of the year, respectively. McMurtry received more Americana Music Award nominations for 2008's Just Us Kids. The album marked his highest Billboard 200 chart position in more than 19 years. The Washington Post noted McMurtry's live prowess: "Much attention is paid to James McMurtry's lyrics, and rightfully so: He creates a novel's worth of emotion and experience in four minutes of blisteringly stark couplets. What gets overlooked, however, is that he's an accomplished rock guitar player. At a sold-out Birchmere, the Austin-based artist was joined by drummer Daren Hess and bassist Ronnie Johnson in a set that demonstrated the raw power of wince-inducing imagery propelled by electric guitar. Animal Rescue Fundraiser

The Wylie Animal Rescue Foundation (WARF) is a small group of pet friendly volunteers dedicated to rescuing companion animals. They rescue animals that are in imminent danger of euthanasia, usually directly from the euthanasia holding rooms of local shelters. We have rescued thousands of animals from certain death, but millions more were not so lucky and died--unloved and unwanted--in shelters across the country. We hope that you can help us turn the tide of suffering and death.

On Saturday, September 10th between 11am - 4pm the Dog Day in the Park fundraiser will be taking place at the Tahoe Vista Animal Shelter which serves the Truckee and North Tahoe portion of Placer County. There will be $6 rabies vaccinations, licensing and $20 micro-chipping, a barbecue, carnival-style dog themed booths, dog show contests, dog and cat adoption and a raffle. Join the fun at the North Tahoe Regional Park on National Avenue in Tahoe Vista.

This weekend is the Peaks & Paws benefit out in Squaw Valley. Two legged and four legged are invited. We still have some good dog friendly rentals available for the event and you can even go to some dog friendly restaurants after the event.

Treat your dog to the best weekend featuring live music and on-mountain fun- all benefiting the Truckee-Tahoe Humane Society!

Enjoy Art, Wine & Beer Tasting, Doggy Vendors, Outdoor Activities, Bark-B-Q and continuous live bluegrass. 12 Wineries will be offering tastings the entire weekend from 5 to 8 PM. $25 ticket, per day, includes a commemorative glass. The Lagunitas beer tasting will be from 2 to 8pm, $4 per beer.

Activities:

Mutt Strut - Saturday, 11am - A 3k walk or run that starts at Squaw Dogs in the Village. Race with your dog or run alone for prizes including Squaw Valley lift tickets and apparel. Registration is $5, starts at 10am at Squaw Dogs, and benefits the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe.

Fetch Fest - Sunday, 3pm - Who can get the most tennis balls out of Cushing Pond? Find out at the "Fetch Fest." We'll dump a lot of tennis balls into the pond, set a timer, and see which dog can fetch the most balls. Prizes include Squaw Valley lift tickets and a pet pass. Registration is $5 benefitting the Humane Society and begins at 2pm at the Cushing Pond. .

Hike with Your Pup on Saturday, 1pm - Take a guided hike from High Camp and enjoy the late season wildflowers and the big views of Lake Tahoe as your pup romps in the wide open. We are offering a $10 discount to ride the cable car specifically for this hike. Use code 3072 at the ticket window. Hike is Saturday August 27 at 1pm and is approximately 1 hour.

Hike with Your Pup on Sunday, 12:50pm - Shirley Canyon is still full of wildflowers, streams, and waterfalls. It's paradise for people and dogs. This guided hike starts in front of the Cable Car and heads up Shirley Canyon. Meeting time is 12:50 in front of the Cable Car on Sunday August 28 and the hike is approximately 1 hour.

The Push is a story about the human spirit and what it can overcome, "The Push," follows two adaptive athletes on their quest to reach the South Pole. On January 17, 2012, for the first time in history, two adaptive athletes will “push” the limits and themselves in sit skis 100 miles across the frozen Antarctic landscape to the most inhospitable place on the planet - the South Pole.

The Push team (John Davis, Grant Korgan, Tal Fletcher, and Doug Stoup) and local sponsors helping prepare the group for the 4-day journey around Lake Tahoe this week so if you are around please help cheer them on.

The group will launch the event Tuesday, August 9 at 6 a.m. from Sunnyside Restaurant & Lodge on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe, 5 miles south of Tahoe City, California, and will paddle clockwise 7 miles to Carnelian Bay, California. They will land just before noon at a lakefront estate (4850 North Lake Boulevard) for a private presentation by “The Push” with hosted lunch attended by media, tourism officials, as well as key community and industry leaders.

From there, the team will paddle to Waterman’s Landing in Carnelian Bay, California for a quick stop, before continuing onto Tahoe Vista, California, completing leg one (10 miles total) at Mourelatos Lakeshore Resort at 5 p.m. to be greeted by resort guests, spectators and supporters. One of the most festive days of the trip, this landing is open to the public and will include live music, along with free stand up paddleboard and kayak rentals and demonstrations. It’s also where the team will overnight. We encourage anyone interested to paddle along for the leg from Waterman's to Mourelatos Lakeshore Resort in Tahoe Vista.

Day two, Wednesday, August 10, is a much more difficult leg with “The Push” team departing at 8 a.m. and paddling 16 miles along the North Shore and camping lakeside that evening on Nevada’s East Shore. The film crew will accompany them on a powerboat, open to selected media, and will follow the group to document the entire journey. Live Internet dispatches will also be made available to the media and public during this training event, as they will be at the South Pole.

The film crew, along with top photographers, will continue to follow the team Thursday, August 11, day three, with another long stretch of paddle, 12 miles, from East Shore clockwise along the lake to a campground located on Tahoe’s West Shore.

Day four, Friday, August 12 (12 miles), is the final day of the trip, and similar to the first night’s landing at Mourelatos Lakeshore Resort is one of the best ways for the public to get involved and cheer on the team from the ground. Davis, Korgan and company will depart the campsite early morning and arrive at the historic Ehrman Mansion at Sugar Pine Point on the West Shore, 10 miles south of Tahoe City, at noon for a picnic lunch.

The team will close the loop on circumnavigating Lake Tahoe, ending their 50-milepaddling exercise, with an official landing taking place at Sunnyside Restaurant & Lodge at approximately 6 p.m. for a small, intimate dinner open to selected media.

July 12 - Studebaker John & The Hawks
Born in an Italian-American section of Chicago, Studebaker John Grimaldi
started playing harmonica at age 7.

July 19 - Shannon McNally & Hot Sauce
Shannon McNally got her first guitar and JJ Cale album at the age of 12 and
never looked back. Combined with the classic rock she grew up listening to –
The Allman Brothers, Dr. John and Hendrix – it’s the musical center of gravity
she brought to her 2002 Capitol Records debut Jukebox Sparrow gaining notice

July 26 - Anna Popovic (Yugoslavia)
Ana Popovic is an incredible guitarist/vocalist known for her diversity of
techniques and styles. Her blend of smoking electric funk slide guitar, jazzy

stage presence makes her an irresistible force in the music world.

August 2 - Curtis Salgado
Curtis Salgado is a Portland, Oregon based blues, R&B and soul singersongwriter.
He plays harmonica and fronts his own band as lead vocalist. The
Washington Post called Salgado a “Superb soul and blues singer.”

August 9 - Ronnie Baker Brooks
Like his father before him, Ronnie Baker Brooks became a Chicago blues
mainstay, playing regularly in Chicago area clubs. After the release of his second
album, Brooks hit the road for what turned out to be a seemingly non-stop
three-year tour, picking up devoted new fans all along the way.

August 16 - Chris Cain
Chris Cain is a master of blues guitar, blues vocals, blues keyboards and blues
vocals. Cain has been called “blues guitar at its finest, a must see.”

August 23 - Joanne Shaw Taylor
Within a year of performing her first band at age 16, Joanne Shaw Taylor
performed with Dave Steward (Eurythmics) and Candy Dulfer (Prince) in the
super group D.U.P, and today she is one of the best female blues guitarists
around.

August 30 - Grand Finale: Roy Rogers & The Delta Rhythm Kings
Roy Rogers has been widely recognized as one of the world's finest
practitioners and innovators of modern slide guitar. Rogers has been
nominated for 8 Grammy's as producer, songwriter and performer. An
exciting live performer, he has performed with Carlos Santana, Bonnie Raitt,
Steve Miller, Linda Ronstadt, Sammy Hagar and many others. Rogers' has
appeared at the world’s most prestigious festivals including Montreux, North

With the glow of the summer sun just dipping over the mountain peaks, Big Head Todd and the Monsters will rock Squaw during the Ultimate Independence Day weekend. The natural ampitheatre of KT-22 will only compliment the famous tunes.

Here's a July 3rd itinerary that will make your friends jealous: Ski or ride from 8am-2pm. Head down and watch the ever entertaining Lake Cushing Crossing as pond skimmers put on outrageous costumes and attempt to cross the frigid waters. Then grab a bite to eat at one of the many eateries and bars in the Village. When you're replenished, head over to the KT Sundeck for the free Big Head Todd and the Monsters concert.

Xterra Tahoe City Triathlon

North Tahoe is the adventure center of North America in the summer. Another example is on June 25th, north Lake Tahoe will host the XTERRA Triathlon. XTERRA Tahoe City is an off-road triathlon that celebrates the natural environment of the North Shores excellent terrain, trails and blue water. XTERRA Tahoe City’s swim occurs in one of the clearest, cleanest, and deepest lakes in North America, Lake Tahoe. Depending on the lake level, the long course includes a 50 meter beach run. The openness of Lake Tahoe makes for a truly open water swim experience. Tahoe City is also home to some of the area’s most treasured mountain biking trails. The biking section starts with a strong climb, continuing on to take riders through fields of wildflowers, and breath taking sierra views. The trails are faster than they are rocky, but the climbs and elevation will test ones fitness level. The start and finish is at Commons Beach. There will be an after party so plan to have some fun after a hard day of racing. Agate Bay Realty has some lodging options including discounted vacation rentals available for the triathlon weekend. Art Paws in Reno

On July 9th, the Nevada Humane Society's Pawspective Art Show join in the celebration of works from local artists spanning different artistic styles and types of media. Featured artists present their vision of wildlife pets and nature. Attendees enjoy live music and light refreshments. If you are an art or animal lover this exhibit is sure to be a treat for the eyes as well as the soul. A portion of the proceeds from art sales directly benefit the homeless pets at Nevada Humane Society.

On July 17th, the Art Paws 11th annual event will be brought to you by PetFolio Magazine. From paw painting to wine/beer tasting to music to art browsing there is plenty to see sniff and do. Pet related products and services various types of art and artists fantastic auction and raffle items dog show live music with the Witney Meyers Band and even a pet psychic. Pets bring your people.

PetFolio sponsored charity event and is roughly a 45 minute drive from Lake Tahoe. Art Paws donates all of the proceeds from the event to 3 non-profit animal organizations as chosen by PetFolio Magazine's, Reader's Choice Contest.

This, free admission, event is a walk through vendor event, held at McKinley Arts and Cultural Center at 925 Riverside Dr., Reno. It is the ONLY canine friendly event during Artown. Tough Mudder Event at Squaw Valley

Squaw Valley will be hosting the Tough Mudder event from September 17 and 18.

Tough Mudder is not your average lame-ass mud run or spirit-crushing ‘endurance’ road race. It’s Ironman meets Burning Man, and it is coming to a location near you. Our 10-12 mile obstacle courses are designed by British Special Forces to test all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie. Forget finish times. Simply completing a Tough Mudder is a badge of honor. Tough Mudder has raised over one million dollars for the Wounded Warrior Project.

WARNING: Tough Mudder is 3-4 times longer and MUCH TOUGHER than a typical mud run such as Warrior Dash. On average, only 78% of participants finish a Tough Mudder event. Only those in strong physical condition should enter.

Post Party

After you finish the course, grab a beer and hang out with your fellow mudders. There’ll be a band and lots of food for sale.

Tough Mudder will also be offering tattoos of our bad-ass logo to all finishers who truly want to commemorate their epic achievement. They are on a first come, first serve basis and everyone who gets a tattoo will be given free entry into the Tough Mudder event of their choice. Say "No" to Biomass in Lake Tahoe

Please help us say "no" to a Biomass Plant in Lake Tahoe.

Children at Risk: Placer County and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) are planning to build in the Tahoe Basin (North Shore - Kings Beach) such a facility, just off Highway 267, less than a mile from the water, within 1000 feet of an elementary school, in a high density population area. If approved, it will operate 24/7, 365 days a year and burn all the forest waste in a radius of at least 30 miles that is currently trucked out of the Basin to Loyalton, just north of Truckee, for burning in a biomass plant located there.

Environmental Degradation: It will pollute not only from Incline Village to Tahoe City but, due to the nature of the air inversion ecology of Tahoe's Basin, it will cast a haze that will drift and drift over the entire lake and degrade air and water quality everywhere.

Biomass Burning in a Basin is Not Green: While we do not oppose biomass power plants conceptually, they should be banned from the Lake Tahoe Basin. WE SUPPORT THE CONSTRUCTION OF A BIOMASS BURNING POWER PLANT AT PLACER COUNTY'S INDUSTRIAL/UTILITY CENTER AT CABIN CREEK, JUST SOUTH OF TRUCKEE (OUT OF THE BASIN), WHERE ALL FOREST WASTE IS TAKEN FOR PROCESSING INTO BIOMASS FUEL.

Please be reminded, however, no biomass power plant will reduce open burning or increase the removal of forest fuels thereby reducing wildfires! These are separate issues!

AN ECONOMIC MISTAKE: Start up funding coming from earmarks not unlike those that funded the famous "bridge to nowhere," a Kings Beach power plant will cost millions to build, is totally unnecessary, and will require subsidies of precious tax dollars. It needs to be stopped.

CLASSIC BUREAUCRACIES AT WORK: Charging forward with a well intended idea but implemented in the wrong place ecologically (a basin subject to air inversions), a biomass burning power plant located in Kings Beach will endanger a precious congressionally declared outstanding national resource: Lake Tahoe! It is both sad and frightening. It should be located at Cabin Creek, out of the Basin.

DISINFORMATION OR BUREAUCRATIC CONFUSION?: Running what many consider to be an overly ambitious campaign replete with questionable claims, both Placer County and TRPA have stated in official governmental documents to have supporters and partnerships regarding the project proposed for Kings Beach, from the Environmental Protection Agency to the University of California, that don't exist. Challenged as to the veracity of such claims, they have now recanted, citing "inadvertent" language errors in such documents

Ignorance is NOT Bliss: Exploiting fears of wildfires and ignorance of current practices regarding open burning and the removal of forest wastes for disposal outside the Basin, they suggest connections to wildfire and pollution reductions that don't exist and won't occur. And, we anticipate that the current environmental study of the proposal, awarded without competitive bidding, will be seriously flawed.

Lifts

All Sage, Seeker and Pilgrim ticketholders have access to the cable car, gondola or other lifts on the mountain. Many yoga classes are held up-mountain, and you can also eat, swim or hike in the High Camp facility, which features floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows and expansive views of the Sierra Nevadas and Lake Tahoe. 2 Weeks Until the Amgen Tour of California in Tahoe

The official Overall Start to the Amgen Tour of Calfiornia is two weeks away starting on Sunday, May 15 the race begins at South Lake Tahoe at 6,300 feet, the highest start elevation in the six-year history of the competition. Stage 1 wraps up in North Lake Tahoe at Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort, with the Stage 2 Start taking place nearby at Squaw Valley USA on Monday, May 16.

Stage 1: Cyclists will begin at MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa on the California/Nevada border in South Lake Tahoe. The peloton will loop past Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course around Heavenly Village, past the starting line again and onto Lake Tahoe Boulevard (Highway 50) through the casino corridor then clockwise around the 72-mile perimeter of Lake Tahoe. After going a lap and a half around the lake, the riders head up Brockway Summit (Highway 267) at North Lake Tahoe to 7,000 feet and one last chance for the climbers to dictate the race outcome with the third and final King of the Mountain finish. After cresting the summit, the lead group plunges down a rapid descent into a hard left turn onto Northstar Drive, where both sprinters and climbers will set-up for a high-speed blast to the finish line at Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort.

The spectator-packed finish line is also home to the Amgen Tour of California Lifestyle Festival, which features a health and fitness expo, cancer awareness education, cycling gear, family activities, bike safety, food and entertainment.

Stage 2: The action starts directly under the historic Olympic rings at the center of the Village at Squaw Valley with riders peddling the cobbled corridors before turning onto Squaw Valley Road and then descending to the Olympic Flame entrance and a left-hand turn onto Highway 89. The peloton will follow the picturesque Truckee River corridor as they make their way on Highway 89 toward Truckee and through the two roundabouts near the Interstate 80 overpass. Riders will then turn left onto historic Donner Pass Road before riding the ramp over Interstate 80 and past Donner Memorial State Park, home to the infamous Donner Party.

The pack will continue along the northern shoreline of Donner Lake as they make their approach to the steeps of Old Highway 40 on their way to Donner Summit and the day's first King of the Mountain finish. From there, athletes speed pass Sugar Bowl Ski Resort, Donner Ranch Ski Resort and Soda Springs Ski Resort and descend into California's Gold Country via Highway 20 and the finish line for Stage 2 at the Sacramento State Capitol.

In previous years, the race has drawn some of the world's most recognizable and respected riders, such as top Tour de France competitors, world champions and Olympic medalists including Lance Armstrong, Tom Boonen, Oscar Freire, Paolo Bettini, Fabian Cancellara, Carlos Sastre, Ivan Basso, George Hincapie, Mark Cavendish and Andy Schleck.

How We Ride Bicycles (Special Event for Tour of California)

During the 10 day time frame that Lake Tahoe will host the first two stages of the Amgen Tour of California, Mont Hubbard will do a special presentation on the mechanics of bicycling. Mont Hubbard received his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from MIT in 1965. In 1975, he completed a Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford, and began his prolific career at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at UC Davis. He currently directs the Sports Biomechanics Laboratory at UC Davis, which includes many researchers who have studied the physics behind numerous sports activities, from Frisbees in flight to horses on the track.

Mont Hubbard has extensively researched and written on the mechanics of sports. For this special engagement before the Amgen Tour of California, Hubbard will present two research projects involving bicycles currently underway at the UC Davis Sports Biomechanics Laboratory. The first project addresses fundamental questions of balance and rider control. Using special bicycles that have been augmented with scientific instruments and techniques previously used in Aeronautics, researchers at UC Davis are studying how human “pilots” intuitively control bicycles.

Hubbard will also explain how mathematical models of bicycle dynamics and human energetic capabilities can be used to understand optimal cycling strategies for minimum time trial performance. These models introduce many variables, such as wind, elevation changes,
and rolling resistance, which professional riders must contend with during the Amgen Tour of California. With the scientific understanding of the mechanics of the bicycle and the limits of the human body, it becomes possible to calculate the “best” way to budget one’s energy during a race.

Lake Tahoe Concours d'Elegance Wooden Boat Show

The wooden boat show will now be held on Father's Day weekend, June 17-19, instead of early August. The summertime event, among the most popular in the Sierra, is being moved because it conflicts with other regional events, and the area will be less busy, curtailing traffic, among other reasons. The premier wooden boat show in North America will now be the opening boating event of the summer, and the true kick-off to the wooden boating season on Lake Tahoe. Again this years dates for the Concours d'Elegance are June 19-21, with Wooden Boat Week running from June 18-24.
